The Russians committed the largest looting of cultural objects since the Second World War

Date:

The Russian military stole tens of thousands of art objects, in particular, artifacts whose age reached several thousand years.

About this writes The New York Times.

The article notes that the Russian theft of art objects in Ukraine was the biggest robbery since the Second World War, when the Nazis took the relevant objects out of occupied countries.

In general, the authors of the article emphasize that the Russians are purposefully trying to deprive Ukraine of its cultural heritage.

More than 15,000 objects of fine art and unique exhibits were stolen in Kherson alone. More than 30 museums were damaged, including those in Kherson, Mariupol and Melitopol.

Currently, a group of Ukrainian lawyers and art historians is collecting evidence of cultural crimes, compiling lists of missing objects and trying to identify potential witnesses and local collaborators who could have helped the Russians.

  • In addition to theft, the Russians are destroying our cultural heritage. According to MKIP data, as of January 5 fixed 1189 damages to cultural objects. The greatest number of losses occurred in the Donetsk, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kherson regions.
