In February of last year, like millions of Ukrainians, the young artist Maryna Kaminska fled the war to save her children, and now the artist lives in the German city of Braunschweig, where she continues to be creative.
At the beginning of March, the personal exhibition of Maryna Kaminska “The Year of Forced Migration” opened in the Museum of the Ukrainian Diaspora. The exposition presents the works of the artist in the technique of acrylic and watercolor painting, created by her on the eve of the full-scale invasion and after the forced move to Germany.
“At home, I left an unfinished large canvas, but from the first days of the full-scale invasion, I started a new series of watercolors … All my drawings created in the last year are reflections, attempts to understand and live the difficult events of the war. Being thousands of kilometers from home, I portray my native Ukraine, which always pulsates in my heart.” says Marina.
According to the artist, some of her works are dedicated to personal experiences of the war, which she, like more than 7 million Ukrainians, is experiencing remotely. But most of the works are about the strength of Ukraine, which was revived this year and continues to be revived in more than 46 million Ukrainians, wherever they are.
“IN in my works, I tried to embody my pain, as well as dreams about the revival of Ukraine and about the light that helps our people in the heroic confrontation in the dark times of war“, the artist notes.
Also, the exhibition presents some works from the series “Roots” and “Inside and Outside”, created by the artist a few years before the war. It is dedicated to family ties and the foundation that forms every personality.
Each painting has a clear structure, while at the same time it is a dynamic abstraction that unites all the figures, reflecting how the relationships within the family infuse and shape the individual.
Among the wartime works, we can single out an original watercolor called “The Security Triangle”. According to the artist, in this work she reflects on the issue of safety for a woman with a child.
“In times of war, every mother thinks about safety and security for her children. My picture is about the need to create three walls with your own body to protect your child from harm“, the artist says.
In her works, Maryna Kaminska continues her search for a person’s self-identity in various periods of her growth and cognition, in particular, family ties, motherhood, national identity, spiritual search. In all her works, the artist tries to understand reality through the prism of the personality structure that perceives and forms it.
Ukrainian artist Maryna Kaminska was born and raised in the village of Gorenichi in the Kyiv region. Studied at the National Academy of Culture and Arts Managers in Kyiv. She began her professional creative career in the field of modern choreography and later continued to embody her own ideas through the forms and rhythms of color in visual art.

The artist actively participates in charity art auctions and projects to support the Armed Forces and help Ukrainians affected by the war.
The artist wrote a touching address for visitors to the exhibition and fans of her work:
“My dear viewer, I am not around now, but my pictures preserve the fullness of my presence and the reflection of Ukraine in my heart. Thank you for being here, for supporting the life of Ukrainian art, thank you that our Kyiv lives and flourishes despite the war!”.
