Borrell hopes to unlock the European Peace Fund for military support to Ukraine

Date:

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, expects that the foreign ministers of the EU member states will be able to make a decision that will help unlock the European Peace Fund in order to further finance military support for Ukraine.

He told journalists about this on Monday in Luxembourg, announcing the agenda of the meeting of the EU Council on foreign affairs.

“(On the agenda) the same: Ukraine and the Middle East. In both cases, the situation worsens. In Ukraine, the export of grain has become a problem again – Russia has already dealt three blows to the vessels. Ships carrying grain were attacked by the Russians. We must increase our support. This is the only possible solution from our side. We will continue to discuss how to unlock payments with the European Peace Fund and how to increase anti-aircraft power. We must put an end to the cycle of “they destroy, we repair”, Borrell detailed.

The high representative of the EU also noted the need to “avoid destruction.”

“Winter has already come. The electrical system continues to heat up and the war continues. Ukrainians are resisting, but they need more support. Today we will listen to the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and we will, I hope, make some decisions to increase our support,” he added.

As you know, since May 2023, Hungary has blocked the allocation of 6.6 billion euros of military aid to Ukraine.
