Lungs were transplanted for the third time in Ukraine: a team of doctors from Feofania performed the operation for 12 hours

Date:

Feofania’s doctors performed lung transplantation for the first time.

A 51-year-old man who had a severe lung disease received new lungs and a chance for a new life. Two weeks before the transplant, the patient contracted covid and this complicated his condition — he lived only thanks to constant oxygen support.

The lung transplant operation lasted 12 hours. Most of the time, the recipient was connected to an ECMO circulatory system. Currently, the patient is in intensive care, his condition is satisfactory.

The donor was a 60-year-old woman who was diagnosed with brain death due to a hemorrhagic stroke. The decision made by her relatives after her death made it possible to save four people and carry out lung, liver and two kidney transplants. This story was told in the Ukrainian Transplant Coordination Center.

The doctors of Feofania Hospital also transplanted a liver to a 62-year-old man. In the state institution “Institute of Nephrology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” and the O.O. Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology, two women underwent kidney transplantation. All patients who received organ transplants feel satisfactory. Transplanted organs work.

The selection of “donor-recipient” pairs was carried out through the Unified State Information System for Transplantation (YEDIST) – this is a unique database that is built in such a way as to avoid any manipulation and minimize the human factor during the selection of “donor-recipient” pairs. The search for pairs is carried out automatically according to clearly defined criteria based on compatibility according to medical indicators, the urgency of the transplant case, the proximity of the hospitals where the donor and recipient are located, and other indicators. Thanks to this system, which became operational in January 2021, transplants from non-family donors began to be actively implemented.

The doctors and relatives of the rescued people sincerely thank the relatives for a difficult but important decision.

By the way, lungs were transplanted for the first time in Ukraine in September 2021, and the second operation was performed in January 2023 in Lviv. Both men, whose lungs were transplanted by Lviv residents, live normal lives.

About 100 patients need lung transplants in Ukraine every year. All organ transplants take place within the framework of the pilot project of the Ministry of Health on transplantation and are fully paid for by the state. The tariff for lung transplantation is set at UAH 2.6 million.
