Post-war security guarantees: what NATO can give to Ukraine

Date:

The president of neighboring Poland, Andrzej Duda, calls on the member states of the North Atlantic Alliance to promise Ukraine the fulfillment of certain security conditions, which may come into effect immediately after the war with the Russian Federation.

Andrzej Duda believes that these commitments on security guarantees for Ukraine will give “the feeling that NATO supports them”, and this is very important both for the government of our country and for its defenders.

In particular, the specified guarantees that the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance could give to Ukraine will probably have a different form of implementation than now, and will practically oblige the main NATO powers, such as the USA, Great Britain and France, to provide military assistance after an attack on Ukraine in the future. Also, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen considers such guarantees to be similar to those that Jerusalem currently receives from Washington.

We would like to remind you that at the moment Ukraine is not part of the defense bloc, but since June 2020, our country has been granted a special status of cooperation with the Alliance – as a partner with increased capabilities that allow increasing the operational interoperability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with NATO forces.
