Recordings of folk tales of Bukovyna and Prykarpattia were made freely available

Folk tales from Bukovyna and Verkhovyna, collected by Bukovyna writer Mykhailo Ivasyuk, can be listened to online. About this informs Society Bukovyna.

Mykhailo Ivasiuk recorded and edited the folklore he published in the collection “Tales of Bukovyna. Tales of Verkhovyna” (1968). They were voiced by the journalists of Suspilne Bukovyna and published on the YouTube channel.

Fairy tales of different lengths have been collected in the Suspilny playlist. Each story is illustrated with drawings created by Chernivtsi watercolorist Pavlo Piven.

Ash cake

The shortest fairy tale. It tells about the mercenary Gavril, who was poor and had many children. He earned money by going to the masters to ask for work. The tale is about one of these journeys.

Hired kuchma

The rich man made fun of the Hutsuls. One of the boys came to ask him for a job. For a year of work, he asked Mr. Kuchma.

Opryshok is a laughingstock

Widow Jadwiga, when completely shriveled and blind, wanted to marry the best boy in the village. Among the Dovbushes, there was a very cheerful young man, and Dovbush ordered him to marry Yadviga.

A tale about ten cows

A child was born in a poor family that had only one cow. A man came to “Pop” to baptize a baby. “Pip” asked for a lot of money for this, which the family did not have. So Pip said to bring him a single cow as payment.

Mariyka and the witch woman

After her mother’s death, Mariyka’s father married another woman. But she didn’t like the girl and on occasion threw her out of the house into the rain so that she would take fire. Mariyka got to the old witch’s house.
