Tennis player Novak Djokovic equaled Steffi Graf’s record for the number of weeks on the world’s number one racket

Date:

Novak Djokovic equaled Steffi Graf’s record for most weeks as world number one after starting his 377th week at the top of the men’s rankings.

The 35-year-old Serb has held the record for most weeks as the men’s world number one since March 2021.

On Monday, he tied Germany’s Graf, who first climbed to the top of the women’s ranking in 1987.

Djokovic first became world number one in 2011 and, like Graf, is a 22-time Grand Slam champion.

After becoming the world number one, Graf remained at the top of the rankings for 186 consecutive weeks, a women’s record equaled by Serena Williams in 2016.

Djokovic’s longest unbroken run at the top was 122 weeks from July 2014 to November 2016. He trails Roger Federer (237 weeks), Jimmy Connors (160) and Ivan Lendl (157) for the record.

Djokovic returned to world number one for the first time in six months by winning the Australian Open in January.

He now has 7,070 points, which is 590 more than the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz.

The men’s world ranking was introduced in 1973, and the women’s – two years later.
