The new Pope was chosen by the American Cardinal Robert Prevo, he accepted the name Lev XIV.
The election of Pontiff was announced on Thursday by French Cardinal Dominic Mamberti, who made the balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral before the attendees at St. Peter’s Square.
As reports Vatican News, Concallav completed the election of the 267th Pope, declaring the new Pontiff Cardinal from US Robert Prevo.
It is noted that prevoy is the first pope from North America and the first Pope-Augustinets. The 69-year-old prevoy spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru.
Robert Francis Prevost was born in 1955 in Chicago (USA), and has a Peru’s citizenship.
He completed his secondary education in the Small Seminary of the Order of St. Augustine in 1973, in 1977 he received a bachelor of mathematical sciences. He was ordained a priest of the Order of St. Augustine in Rome in 1982, after which he received a license and a doctoral degree in the field of canon law at St. Homa Aquinas Papal University in Rome.
In 1985, he joined the Augustine Mission in Peru, headed the seminary there and taught canonical law. In 2001-2014 he was the priority of the Augustinians in Chicago (elected twice). In 2015, he was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo (Peru).
In 2023, Pope Francis appointed a prefect of the dicketer in the affairs of the bishops, a key position in the Roman Curia, and on February 6, 2025 he brought him into the Sannals of Episcopals.
The Pope speaks in English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese, he also reads German and Latin.
“It is a great honor for me to be aware that he is the first American to become a Pope. What an excitement and what an honor for our country. I look forward to meeting with Leo XIV. It will be a very important point,” President Donald Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
