Roman Grymailo is 26 years old, a defender from the village of Kutriv in Volyn. Even before the full-scale invasion, he worked in Poland and lived an ordinary life. However, the war made its adjustments.
On February 24, after the news of Russia’s military aggression, Roman made the decision to defend the Motherland without hesitation. The boy returned to Ukraine “following the call of his heart” and joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a volunteer. At first, Roman was sent to Great Britain, where he underwent specialized 21-day training, and then he studied professional military training in Ukraine.
Then the fighter went to the Donetsk direction, near the city of Avdiivka, where he fought and, together with his comrades, repelled the aggressor. It was there that he went through heavy fighting, enemy shelling and rocket attacks. And it was there, in the Donetsk direction, as a result of one of these enemy shellings that he received a mine-explosive wound and lost both lower limbs.
Then there was the evacuation, the difficult road to the Dnipro, and at the same time the boundless desire to live. Roman lost his limbs, but did not give up. First, the defender was admitted to the trauma department of the Regional Clinical Hospital named after M. I. Pirogov, and then for rehabilitation at the Clinical Center for Medical Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy.
Roman went through long and difficult months of rehabilitation and struggle before he was able to fully recover and adapt to prosthetics. Now he is full of lust for life and fighting for his own future, and despite everything, he believes in the earliest victory of Ukraine over the enemy.
