The vote on the question of confidence in the Scholz government is scheduled for December 16 – mass media

Date:

Germany plans to hold a vote of no confidence in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government on December 16, the “Handelsblatt” newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing sources in the CDU/CSU party bloc.

“As “Handelsblatt” learned, the vote on the issue of confidence in the government is scheduled for December 16,” the publication informs.

Earlier, the leaders of the CDU/CSU and Social Democratic Party parliamentary groups in the Bundestag, Friedrich Merz and Rolf Mützenich, reached an agreement on this.

“Handelsblatt” also learned from CDU/CSU circles that the elections to the Bundestag should be held on February 23, 2025,” the publication notes.

At the same time, these dates must be approved by the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Earlier, the Free Democratic Party of Germany left the ruling coalition. For his part, Scholz said that he wants to invite a vote of confidence in his government in January 2025 in the Bundestag against the background of the problems that Germany is currently experiencing. However, Merz criticized the plan announced by Scholz with a vote in January 2025 and demanded that the chancellor quickly organize it.

The Associated Press agency explained that since now, without the Free Democratic Party, the ruling coalition led by Scholz does not have a majority in the Bundestag, it will most likely lose such a vote in the Bundestag. This will lead to early elections.
