About 19 million books were written off in the libraries of Ukraine, including 11 million in Russian.
This was announced by Yevgenia Kravchuk, deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, whose comments are published on the Rada’s website.
According to the deputy, in this way public libraries fulfilled the recommendations of the Ministry of Culture regarding the cancellation of certain types of books.
In particular, we are talking about books, the content of which is “aimed at the elimination of the independence of Ukraine”, encroachment on human rights and freedoms, propaganda of violence, committing terrorist acts, inciting inter-ethnic, racial, religious enmity, justifying, recognizing the legitimacy, denying the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and others
Also, books from Russian under-sanctioned publishing houses are subject to removal from libraries.
There is also a recommendation to write off books whose authors supported the war against Ukraine.
Among the books to be written off, there are some Ukrainian-language books from the Soviet era.
“In general, the ratio of books in Russian and Ukrainian languages in our libraries is very sad. Currently, it is said that it is necessary to update funds and purchase books in the Ukrainian language as soon as possible,” said Kravchuk.
Currently, in public libraries of Ukraine, about 44% of books are in Russian, the rest in Ukrainian or languages of the EU countries.
