A new capital was chosen in Indonesia

Date:

The Indonesian government has chosen a new capital instead of Jakarta. The Minister of National Development Planning, Suharso Monoarfa, said that Nusantara in the southeast of Kalimantan Island will be the new capital for now.

Translated from Indonesian Nusantara as “archipelago”.

“This is a simple and resonant word that describes the Republic of Indonesia well”— Monoarfa said during a meeting with representatives of the special committee on the creation of the new capital.

Some participants in the meeting felt that the name Nusantar was potentially confusing, as the word is also used to describe the country, so it was suggested that the new capital be called the Special Administration of Nusantar to avoid confusion.

The minister also said they consulted with linguists and historians before presenting about 80 options to the president, including Negara Jaya (glorious country), Nusantara Jaya (glorious archipelago) and Nusa Karya (homeland creation).

They planned to move the capital in 2019. Jakarta is home to more than 30 million people, and the city is gradually being submerged by swampy terrain and numerous rivers that wash the soil.

Changes were made due to the pandemic. It is planned to start construction in the coming month, and the relocation of the capital is planned for 2024. All the changes will cost 32 billion dollars.
