Footballer Sebastien Haller scored his first goal after recovering from cancer

Date:

Sebastien Haller scored his first goal since recovering from testicular cancer as Borussia Dortmund thrashed Freiburg.

The former West Ham striker, who returned to action three weeks ago, scored the third goal with a header in the 51st minute in front of the ‘Yellow Wall’ of the Westfalenstadion.

Haller was diagnosed days after signing for Dortmund as a replacement for Erling Haaland and required two operations.

The 28-year-old underwent four rounds of chemotherapy and surgery in November.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment since day one. When I scored, it felt like the whole stadium was on fire,” Haller told Sky Sports.

“I’m happy, but there’s still a long way to go, so we’ll keep going and hope for more goals.”

Haller returned to the field on January 22 in a home game against “Augsburg” with a score of 4:3, and a week later he started for the first time in the starting line-up of “Dortmund” against “Bayer”.

Dortmund beat Freiburg, who sent off Kilian Sidillia in the 17th minute.

Nico Schlotterback, Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt and Gio Reina got on the scoresheet for Dortmund, along with Haller, as they moved up to third in the Bundesliga, two points behind leaders Union Berlin.
