Banshees of Inisherin won three major awards at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles.
The film took home best musical or comedy and best screenplay, as well as best actor in a comedy for its star, Irish actor Colin Farrell.
“I never expect my films to find an audience, and when they do, it shocks me,” Farrell said.
Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical The Fablemen was also one of the big winners, winning best drama.
Winners in the TV categories included high school comedy Abbott Elementary, Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon and dark satirical comedy White Lotus.
Most of the winners received their awards in person, despite speculation that many stars will not attend this year’s ceremony due to controversy surrounding the organization behind the Globes.
Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, Banshee of Inishreen follows two friends who fall out after one decides to end the relationship abruptly.
In the film, Farrell reunited with director Martin McDonagh and Brendan Gleeson, who starred with him. The trio previously worked together on the 2007 cult film In Bruges.
Spielberg won best director for The Fablemen, about a young man based on Spielberg himself who falls in love with cinema.
“With this story, I put a lot of things in my way,” he said in his speech. “I’ve told this story in bits and pieces throughout my career, but I’ve never had the courage to tackle the story.”
Other major film winners include “Everything, Everywhere and At Once,” which won acting awards for its two stars, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Hui Kuan.
In the crazy sci-fi film, Yeo plays a laundry worker who jumps through the multiverse exploring different versions of herself.
Accepting her award, Yeo said: “I turned 60 last year. And I think all of you ladies get it: as the days, years, and numbers get longer, it seems like the options are getting smaller.
“And I guess at that point I thought, ‘Well, hey, you’ve had a really good run, you’ve worked with some of the best people … then the best gift came – Everything and everywhere and at once.’
Elsewhere, Austin Butler beat off stiff competition to be named best actor in a drama for his portrayal of singer Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic.
“I owe it to this bold visionary director who allowed me to take risks and I always knew I would be supported. Baz Luhrmann, I love you,” Butler said. “And finally, Elvis Presley himself. You were an icon and a rebel.”
Cate Blanchett was named best actress in a drama for her role in Tar, but did not attend as she is working on a production in the UK.
Kevin Costner, who won Best Actor in a Drama Series for Yellowstone said in advance that he is “very sorry” that he will not get through severe flooding currently affecting California .
Other winners who weren’t at the ceremony included Zendaya, who won best actress in a television drama for Euphoria.
Jay Ellis, who announced her award, told the audience: “She’s busy, she’s working, y’all. It’s good”.
Abbott Elementary was named best comedy series and two of its stars, Tyler James Williams and Quinta Brunson, won acting awards.
White Lotus won for Outstanding Limited Series, with star Jennifer Coolidge the only actress to appear in both seasons of the show.
Reflecting on my career in a nearly four-minute award speech, Coolidge thanked the show’s creator, Mike White, for the push the show gave her career.
“I had such big dreams and hopes when I was a young person, but life shattered them,” she said. “I had these giant ideas and then you get old… and I just want to say, Mike White, you gave me hope, a new beginning.”
Other TV acting winners included Jeremy Allen White of The Bear and Julia Garner of The Ozarks, who said playing her wildly popular character Ruth Langmore “was the greatest gift of my life.”
Quan, who starred alongside Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as a child, won best supporting actor.
“I was brought up so that I would never forget where I came from and always remember who gave me my first opportunity. I am very happy to see Steven Spielberg here today,” he said.
