According to the Ukrainian Center for Transplant Coordination, Nazarchyk, who recently celebrated his fourth birthday, was the first in Ukraine to transplant bone marrow cells from a non-family donor. There are three years between the pictures.
Due to congenital immunodeficiency, the boy’s immune system practically did not work, and the only salvation was a transplant from an unrelated donor. It was held in NDSL “Okhmatdit” April 1, 2020. This happened at the height of the COVID-19 epidemic, which greatly complicated the logistics of donor material. Then the cells of the German donor were transported to Ukraine in the cockpit. Nazarchyk’s successful treatment three years ago marked the beginning of a new and very important stage in Ukrainian hematology oncology.
The other day, doctors of the Kyiv Bone Marrow Transplantation Center performed the 50th transplant of hematopoietic stem cells from a non-family donor in Ukraine.
