Michigan State: Three killed in university shooting

Date:

Police say at least three people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University.

In addition to the three victims, police said the suspect died, probably from a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Five more people were injured in an attack on the main campus in East Lansing Monday night.

Police described the suspect as a “black man of short stature.” They later said he was 43 years old, and there was no indication of his affiliation with the university.

Students and local residents were ordered to shelter in place during the search, but police later lifted the order, saying there was “no longer a threat to the campus.”

They added that the suspect “was found outside the campus.”

In previously released photos, the suspect was wearing a denim jacket, a dark blue baseball cap and red sneakers.

The shooting began shortly after 20:00 local time on Monday (01:00 GMT Tuesday).

Police officers responded to the attack, finding victims in Berkey Hall on the north side of campus, as well as in an adjacent Michigan State University building.

At the briefing, the police said that there are several crime scenes and their investigation is ongoing. The attacker’s motives are unknown.

Several ambulances were seen arriving at the scene and the victims – some of whom are believed to be in a life-threatening condition – are currently being treated in hospital.

“It’s truly a nightmare that we’re living in today,” University Police Deputy Chief Chris Roseman said.

All campus activities are canceled for at least 48 hours. East Lansing is located approximately 70 miles (112 km) northwest of Detroit.
