The war in Ukraine has brought huge destruction, human loss and economic difficulties.
However, before it, there were different ways of diplomatic settlement that could prevent a large -scale conflict.
Consider key alternative scenarios that could change the course of events.
Diplomatic ways to resolve conflict
1.) Minsk Agreements: The Minsk agreements, signed in 2014-2015, provided for the mechanism of conflict resolving in the Donbass. However, their implementation faced difficulties because the parties accused each other of violations.
2.) neutral status of Ukraine: One possible decision could be the consolidation of the non -aligned status of the country, which could reduce the tension between Russia and the West. However, this idea was not realized.
3.) more active involvement of international mediators: The diplomatic intervention of EU, US and other countries could contribute to the search for a compromise decision before the war. However, their efforts were limited.
Economic measures and sanctions
4.) Preventive sanctions: Against Russia, Western countries could impose rigid sanctions before the start of hostilities, which could affect Moscow’s strategic decisions.
5.) Investments in the stability of Ukraine: Strengthening the economy and infrastructure of the country could increase its ability to withstand external pressure in advance.
Internal political solutions
6.) More active work with the Donbass region: Increased integration of the eastern regions of Ukraine into the nationwide economy and policy could reduce the level of internal tension and minimize the impact of external players.
7.) Political reforms and fight against corruption: Internal reforms could help stabilize the situation and reduce social discontent, which would reduce the risks of escalation of conflict.
Although the war has already unfolded, the analysis of possible alternative ways of preventing it is important for extracting lessons for the future. More active diplomacy, economic sustainability and internal consolidation could be key factors in preventing conflict. Ukraine needs to take into account these aspects in the future strategy to restore and strengthen its international situation.
