The Global Money Week information campaign for children and youth has started in Ukraine

Date:

Global Money Week – an international information campaign on financial awareness – began in Ukraine today. The National Bank supported this initiative for the ninth time and became the official coordinator of the campaign in Ukraine.

This year, the start of the campaign coincided with the NBU’s birthday, because it was in the spring of 1991 that the history of the Ukrainian Central Bank began with the adoption of the Law “On Banks and Banking Activities” by the Verkhovna Rada. According to this law, the Ukrainian Republican Office of the State Bank of the USSR was transformed into the National Bank of Ukraine – the central issuing bank of the state.

The first event within the framework of Global Money Week 2023 was the meeting of the Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine Andrii Pyshnyi with the children of NBU employees on the topic “Mission: financial defense. Profession: bank employee”. During the meeting, Andriy Pishnyi spoke about the work of the National Bank during the war, the functions of the central bank, the struggle on the financial front and the importance of the profession of bank employees.

“Together with your parents, we work every day on the financial defense of our country. Even during the war, the Ukrainian financial system works like clockwork. The international community admires our work and sustainability. A stable financial system in a country in which there is a war, working bank branches, continuous non-cash payments, work from bomb shelters – for the whole world this is something incredible, magic. And this is the merit of your parents, who are real stars in the world of finance, Andriy Pishniy emphasized. – I believe that every Ukrainian should understand what the team of the National Bank takes care of. Even more, everyone should be financially literate, well oriented in the market of financial services, in order to help the NBU in protecting financial stability and the further reconstruction of Ukraine.”

The Global Money Week campaign in Ukraine will last for two weeks – from March 20 to April 2. A rich program of events on financial topics awaits the participants, traditionally prepared by the National Bank of Ukraine together with the USAID Project “Financial Sector Reform”. Preschoolers, pupils and students invited by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine will take part in the events.

“USAID has been supporting the annual Global Money Week financial literacy campaign in Ukraine since 2014. We are very pleased to see that the National Bank of Ukraine has resumed holding Global Money Week events, despite the war with Russia, and we are glad to be a partner of the NBU to teach Ukrainian youth to use money wisely. Together with the NBU, we will continue to find creative ways to improve the knowledge, attitude and behavior of Ukrainians regarding personal finances. By increasing the level of financial literacy, we contribute to the future stability of the financial system and the financial well-being of the population,” said Robert Bond, head of the USAID Financial Sector Reform Project.

In total, more than 3,300 teachers who support the campaign in their educational institutions have registered for Global Money Week 2023 events. For them, the NBU prepared video lessons, educational materials for conducting lessons, contests for preschoolers, pupils and students, contests “10 most active schools” and “10 most active institutions of higher and vocational education”, surveys on financial literacy for teenagers, European Money Quiz (the opportunity to compete for the title of European champion!), webinars and virtual tours from NBU experts and our partners.

Also, within the framework of Global Money Week 2023, a powerful educational project will be launched this year – the second recruitment to the Financial Literacy School for teachers “Talan”. Last summer, the “Talan” school graduated 264 teachers, more than 3,600 educators who want to improve their level of financial knowledge and prepare to teach the discipline “Entrepreneurship and financial literacy” enrolled in the second wave of training. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine will introduce this subject in schools from 2025.
