The President of the European Council called the start of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU a historic moment

Date:

In view of the beginning of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, made a statement in which he called this day a “historic moment”.

The text of the statement was distributed on Tuesday in Brussels before the start of the negotiations, which will start in the afternoon in Luxembourg within the framework of intergovernmental conferences.

“Today we are witnessing a historic moment. After the decision of the European Council in December 2023 to start negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the EU, both countries are starting a real transformation to full membership in the EU – a moment of pride for both countries and a strategic step for the EU,” said Michel.

The President of the European Council stated that this is the result of enormous efforts of Ukraine and Moldova to carry out reforms. “When the will of the people is fulfilled, when visionary leadership produces results and democracy is implemented in practice, we see the fruits of real progress. The EU continues to cooperate with Ukraine and Moldova, moreover, Ukraine is defending itself from Russia’s illegal aggressive war, and Moldova is facing the consequences of this war,” he stated.

Michel emphasized that the start of accession negotiations with the help of the first intergovernmental conferences is a “key milestone”. “This is also proof of the enormous progress achieved by both countries on the way to European integration, despite the huge problems they have faced and continue to face,” the president of the European Council is convinced.

At the same time, he noted that Ukraine’s efforts are “even more admirable, given that Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine has brought unprecedented difficulties and troubles.” “The people of Ukraine showed extraordinary courage and solidarity, defending their sovereignty and their European future,” said Michel.

Regarding Moldova, the President of the Eurocouncil noted that Chisinau also “faced serious problems, including economic pressure and political intimidation, but, as before, firmly strives for even closer ties with the EU.”

“Both countries have demonstrated an impressive commitment to reforms and compliance with European values. The transformative steps taken in areas such as the rule of law, governance and the judiciary are encouraging and clearly demonstrate their unwavering commitment to join the European family. The support of their societies was also crucial along this path,” he detailed.

At the same time, Michel noted that the beginning of negotiations is only the beginning of a long process. “While today we celebrate a significant step forward, we must also recognize that the road ahead will require continued effort, dedication and further significant reforms. Ukraine and Moldova will need to continue work on strengthening institutions, fighting corruption and increasing economic stability in order to meet the strict standards of full EU membership. The European Union, through its institutions and member states, is ready to support Ukraine and Moldova at every stage of this path. We will provide the necessary resources, expertise and political support. Together we can build a stronger and more united Europe, where every nation has the opportunity to flourish in peace and prosperity,” said Michel.
