The main purpose of Antonio Guterres’ visit is negotiations with the President of Ukraine regarding the extension of the grain agreement.
Ukrainian grain is key to the world’s food security, especially when it comes to the survival of the poorest countries. That is why the UN Secretary General arrived in Kyiv on March 8.
As his press secretary Stefan Djuzhparik reported, answering the questions of the dpa news agency, he relays to Tagesschau.:
“On Wednesday morning, he will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in Kyiv to discuss the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative in all its aspects, as well as other pressing issues.”
As you know, the contract for the export of Ukrainian grain due to Russia’s aggressive behavior in the Black Sea expires on March 18. The UN considers that continuation is absolutely necessary.
Ukraine is already conducting online negotiations on the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative. The initiative was launched through the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey last July. It was extended in November. Expires March 18.
By the way, last year, when the Russian Federation prevented the export of grain from Ukraine in every possible way, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, called it a war crime.
