The winners of the 2023 Venice Film Festival have been announced

The results were announced in Venice international film festival. The award ceremony took place on the main site of the film festival on Lido Island. The main award, the “Golden Lion of St. Mark”, was won by the film “Poor People” by the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.

The “Silver Lion” as the best director was awarded to Matteo Garrone with the film “I am the captain” about the journey of emigrants through the Mediterranean Sea. Agnieszka Holland with the film “Green Border” about refugees on the Belarusian-Polish border was awarded a special jury prize.

The Grand Jury Prize, the third most important award, went to Ryusuke Hamaguti with the film “Evil Does Not Exist.” The Volpi Cup for Best Actor went to Peter Sarsgaard for his role in Michel Franck’s Memory.

Kaylee Spaney, who starred in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla based on Priscilla Presley’s book Elvis and Me, was recognized as the best actress. Pablo Larraín and Guillermo Calderon were awarded for the best screenplay for the film “The Count”, a black comedy about Augusto Pinochet.

The Marcello Mastroianni Award was awarded to actor Seydoux Sarra, who played Matteo Garrone in the film “I am the Captain”. The Czech-Slovak film “Photophobia”, created with the participation of Ukraine, won the Europa Cinemas Label Award at the 80th Venice Film Festival. The tape tells about a boy who was hiding from Russian missiles in the Kharkiv subway.

The film directed by Ivan Ostrohovsky and Pavol Pekarchyk was shown as part of the Giornate degli Autori program. The Ukrainian producer of the tape was Denis Ivanov from “Arthouse Trafik”.
