Zelensky responded to the petition about renaming Russia to Moscow. The Russian Federation reacted.

Zelensky considered a petition in which it is proposed to officially rename Russia to Muscovy.


President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi turned to to Prime Minister Denys Shmygal with a request to find out together with scientific institutions whether it is possible to return the Russian Federation to its historical name – Moscow.

Before that, Zelensky considered an electronic petition, the author of which proposed to officially rename the name “Russia” to “Moscow” and replace the terms “Российский” with “Московский” and “Российская федержания” with “Московская федерация”.

Zelensky noted that “the issue raised in the petition needs to be carefully worked out both in terms of the historical and cultural context and in view of the possible international legal consequences.”

For her part, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Maria Zakharova reacted on the initiative According to her, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s assignment to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to study the possibility of renaming Russia to Moscow is “evidence of an attempt to create an anti-Russia.”

In addition, in fact, Russia has existed for only 301 years – since October 22, 1721, when the Moscow Tsar Peter I proclaimed the Moscow kingdom the Russian Empire.
