The designer used the original historical forms of some letters and the style of the beginning of the 20th century of the era of Narbut and Krychevsky.
Capital type designer Bohdan Gdal developed the font for the new name of the Kyiv metro station “Lev Tolstoy Square”, which was renamed “Ukrainian Heroes Square”.
In a comment to the journalist of “Vechirnyi Kyiv”, the designer says that it was not the first time he made letters for the names of metro stations – earlier he had broken up the font for “Pochaina”. And now, of his own accord, he took up the development of the font for “Square of Ukrainian Heroes”. And it took him more than three months – from January of this year.
“The appearance of the names of metro stations is particularly important. After all, a dungeon is a crowded place where letters affect the mood and general aesthetics. That’s why I wanted there to be a beautiful design of inscriptions,” says Bohdan Gdal.
The author conveyed the Ukrainian spirit in letters with the help of two components: the original historical forms of some letters and the style from the beginning of the 20th century of the era of Narbut and Krychevsky.
The designer posted his work on social networks, where he wrote about his vision for the new design of the metro station on the blue branch. The network has already begun to actively discuss Cossack crosses and a separate form of letters.
“Partly in the title, I used historical forms of letters that are unusual for the modern eye. But I do it consciously: the Ukrainian spirit is conveyed through this design of letters. As for the Cossack crosses, they also succinctly convey the attachment to the soldiers,” Bohdan explains.
According to him, the Kyiv metro already knows about this version of the design of “Square of Ukrainian Heroes”. And they liked him. But the final decision must be made by the architect of the station or the Institute, which is the inheritor of the architect’s copyright.
“No one gave me any guarantees. It was my own impulse to design a font for the station. I hope that this design will find its final application,” says the designer.
As you know, the people of Kyiv voted to rename the metro station. 83% of respondents voted for this decision.
