Dmytro Buryak: Hong Kong police launch the CYBERDEFENDER METAVERSE platform

Date:

The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police has introduced CyberDefender , a new metaverse platform aimed at educating the public about the potential dangers associated with Web3 and the metaverse. The initiative aims to provide citizens with the knowledge to navigate the digital age and prevent technology-related crimes.

Launch CyberDefender

Accompanied by an online event called ” Exploring the Metaverse” CyberDefender was presented in three virtual venues, contributing to the discussion of crime prevention strategies in the metaverse. Mr. Ip Chuk Yew, Chief Inspector of CSTCB, emphasized the importance of caution in the metaverse, urging the audience to exercise the same level of vigilance as when using the Internet.

Crimes common in cyberspace, such as investment fraud, unauthorized access, theft and sexual crimes, can also occur in the metaverse, Mr. Yip said. The decentralized nature of virtual assets in Web3 may increase the risk of cybercriminals targeting endpoint devices, virtual asset wallets and smart contracts, potentially leading to asset theft.

Focus on the younger generation

CyberDefender’s educational initiatives are primarily aimed at raising awareness among the younger generation. The Hong Kong Police intends to organize awareness programs through the CyberDefender Metaverse platform to educate teenagers about the latest developments in information technology, potential pitfalls and the importance of preventing technology-related crimes.

During the first quarter of 2023, Hong Kong police received 663 reports of virtual assets, resulting in total losses of $570 million. This represents a significant increase of 75% compared to the same period in 2022, highlighting the growing importance of combating cyber threats and increasing cyber security awareness .

The role of CyberDefender

Because metaverse technology continues to grow and gain in popularity, initiatives like CyberDefender play a critical role in equipping people with the knowledge and awareness they need to safely navigate this digital landscape. By informing the public of potential risks and promoting cyber security practices, the Hong Kong Police is committed to mitigating technology-related crimes and keeping citizens safe in the digital age.
