The net sale of currency by the National Bank decreased for the third week in a row – to $630.9 million

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) this week reduced the net sale of dollars on the interbank market to $630.91 million from $670.41 million previously, according to data from the regulator.

According to them, the volume of purchases of currency by the central bank remained meager – $0.75 million, while its sale decreased to $631.66 million.

During the week, the official exchange rate of the hryvnia strengthened to 40.5420 UAH/$ from 40.6413 UAH/$1, although on Wednesday the rate reached a historic low of 40.7599 UAH/$1.

At the same time, since the beginning of 2024, the official exchange rate of the hryvnia has fallen by 6.7%, or by UAH 2.54, and since the transition of the National Bank to the managed flexibility regime on October 3, 2023, by 10.9%, or by UAH 3.98.

On the cash market, the hryvnia weakened by 7 kopecks during the week. – up to UAH 40.91/$1.

According to the data that the NBU managed to publish during this period, from Monday to Thursday, the negative balance between the volume of currency purchases by the population and its sales, in accordance with the dynamics of the national currency rate, narrowed from $51.41 million to $47.88 million.

In general, the volume of purchases of currency by the population in June exceeded the volume of its sale by $0.97 billion, while in May this figure was $1.04 billion.

As reported, after weakening the official exchange rate of the hryvnia by 90 kopecks in May. in June it decreased by only 3 kopecks. – up to UAH 40.5374/$1, although in the middle of the month the exchange rate renewed the record low for the entire history – UAH 40.6908/$1.

The National Bank explained this weakening by the increase in government spending after receiving external financing in March-April, as well as the impact of the largest package of easing currency restrictions for enterprises announced on May 3 since the beginning of the full-scale war.

On the cash market, after a somewhat turbulent May, the hryvnia even strengthened by 20 kopecks by the end of June. – up to UAH 40.85/$1.

International reserves of Ukraine in June decreased, according to preliminary estimates of the NBU, by $1.14 billion to $37.89 billion, and net interventions of the National Bank amounted to $2.99 ​​billion compared to $3.07 billion in May.
