Leaders of the US Democratic Party committee intend to officially approve President Joe Biden as a candidate for the post of head of state in July, before the start of the party convention scheduled for August, The New York Times (NYT) reported on Tuesday, citing sources.
According to the publication, since May, Biden was planned to be approved as a candidate during a video conference a few weeks before the convention. The process should begin next Friday, when the party committee will hold a virtual meeting. Another meeting will be held on Sunday. Party voters will begin casting their ballots on Monday, a process that should take about a week. After that, the votes will be counted.
Biden actually won the internal party election in the Democratic Party, but has not yet become the official presidential candidate. Initially, it was assumed that his candidacy should be approved at the party congress. The convention of the Democratic Party will be held in August.
On Monday, former US President Donald Trump won enough votes at the Republican Party convention to become a candidate for the post of head of state in the 2024 election.
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024.
