New York Fashion Week Street Style: Fall 2023

Date:

This city is a Swiss buffet. Here are the best looks.

Transforming looks — especially during fashion week — has always been a topic of media, but not necessarily of the social variety.

Long before Instagram or TikTok were even a glimmer in their creators’ eyes, WWD was the go-to source for what was happening on the streets, capturing the street style of people whether they worked in the industry or just had something to say and said it through clothes

Watching the scene outside of New York Fashion Week is often a way to keep up with trends before they hit the catwalk. The Fall 2023 collections have just kicked off in New York, and editors, buyers, celebrities and influencers in attendance can offer key search tips in real time.

In particular, New York is a Swiss buffet, inspiration for every taste. Outside of Carolina Herrera and Markarian, for example, we’re sure to spot Ladies Who Lunch in their womenswear, while cool kids like Jaxon Wiederhoft and Elena Velez wow the artsy downtown crowd with amazing looks.

Regardless of tribe, here are some unifying trends to look out for.

Slim floor-length skirts are fast replacing the mini-mini as the must-have, and they are sure to be spotted all over town. As will graphic knitwear, which will take center stage as temperatures this week are expected to be too warm for showy coats. Instead, lighter jackets in denim, leather and nylon can just fly.

As for colors, Pantone’s spicy line-up this season is red orange, red dahlia, prominent yellow and the color of the year, viva magenta, perfect for those looking for paparazzi peacocks. Hot fudge—a decadent shade of brown—is likely to dominate black as a neutral color.

In terms of tailoring, oversized silhouettes continue to hold sway, but expect them to be worn with loafers or ballet flats. Both fit the mood right now, which is more formal than sneakers allow, but still practical. Fashion loves stilettos, but if they’re six inches high, it’s bound to cause delays on the way to the next show.
