The player of the “Philadelphia Flyers” Ivan Provorov decided not to participate in the annual “Pride evening” of the NHL because of his Orthodox faith.
Flyers players warmed up before Tuesday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks wearing jerseys with rainbow names and numbers and rainbow ribbon wrapped around their sticks.
But Provorov was absent because he wanted to “remain true to himself and his religion.”
“I respect everyone. I respect everyone’s choice,” he said.
Flyers coach John Tortorella supported Provorov’s decision, saying, “It has to do with his beliefs and his religion. I respect [Проворова]he is always true to himself.”
In a statement, the Philadelphia Flyers said they are “committed to inclusivity and proud to support the LGBTQ+ community.”
The Flyers added that rainbow-themed jerseys and sticks will be auctioned off to raise money for charities that “develop hockey in various communities.”
