Sunak announced his resignation as prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party

Date:

Prime Minister of Great Britain Rishi Sunak announced after the parliamentary elections that his party is going into opposition, and he himself will leave the post of leader of the Conservatives.

“I am leaving the post of prime minister, and I am proud to have led the work of this government,” – Sunak said in Downing Streetmaking his last address to journalists as Prime Minister.

He noted that he would leave the post of leader of the Conservatives “as soon as a suitable replacement is selected.”

The prime minister apologized to the citizens of Great Britain, saying that he had devoted himself to the work, but he “heard their anger and frustration and takes responsibility” for the problems faced by the country’s residents.

Sunak wished good luck to Labor leader and future Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his family.

Immediately after the address, Sunak went to Buckingham Palace to inform King Charles III of his resignation as Prime Minister.

Parliamentary elections were held in Great Britain on Thursday, as a result of which the Conservatives were defeated: the Labor Party currently holds 412 of the 650 seats in the Parliament, while the Conservatives managed to secure only 121 seats.

The Conservative Party was in power in Great Britain for about 14 years.
