Italian archaeologists have found helmets and weapons from the naval battle of Alalia in 535 BC during excavations in Velia, south of Naples.

In total, archaeologists found the walls and remains of an archaic temple dating back to the sixth century BC, painted pottery, weapons and two helmets.

Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said the find underscores “the importance of continuing to invest in research.”

In turn, the general director of Italian museums, Massimo Osanna, said that these found relics “shed light on the history of a powerful Greek colony.”

The Battle of Alalia was a sea battle between the Phocaean fleet and the combined flotilla of Carthage and the Etruscan city of Cere near the city of Alalia in Corsica in 535 BC.
