Swift’s autonomous system, which combines artificial intelligence algorithms, has overtaken world champions several times and set the fastest record time in a drone race

About this informs Science Alert.

Swift is an autonomous system that has overtaken world champions in 15 out of 25 races on a course with many sharp turns and sharp turns, designed by a professional drone pilot.

Developed by researchers at the University of Zurich, Swift combines AI learning algorithms with a single camera and built-in sensors that detect the drone’s environment and movement.

Researcher Elia Kaufmann aimed to create a system that did not rely on external cameras to detect movement, as in previous unmanned drone races.

“Achieving the level of professional pilots with an autonomous drone is a difficult task, because the robot must fly at its physical limits, estimating its speed and location on the circuit solely with the help of on-board sensors,” Kaufmann notes.

First-person drone racing involves flying a drone around a track littered with gates that you need to navigate carefully to avoid crashing. Pilots see the course using video from a camera mounted on the drone. The Swift also has a built-in camera and inertial sensor to measure the acceleration and rotation of the drone.

Although the Swift lost 40% of the races, it passed every driver multiple times and set the fastest race record time, half a second faster than the human best.
