Australia supported the repeal of Russia’s veto right in the UN Security Council

Date:

Australia supported the demand of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to deprive Russia of the right of veto in the UN Security Council and called for further reform of this body

This was stated by the head of the Australian Foreign Ministry, Penny Wong, writes Bloomberg.

“We must demand more from the permanent members, including limiting the Russian Federation’s use of the veto,” Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said during her speech at the UN General Assembly.

According to her, Russia mocks the UN every day, “continuing its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine.”

It is noted that the Security Council consists of 15 members, five of which are permanent and have the right to veto: China, Russia, France, Great Britain and the United States.

“We need to provide more permanent and non-permanent offices for Africa, Latin America and Asia, including permanent seats for India and Japan,” Wong said.

She added that Australia is applying for a seat on the Security Council for 2029-2030.

Wong also stressed that tensions in the South China Sea and North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons are among the issues that cause “the most controversial circumstances in decades” and require a greater commitment to conflict prevention.

“In short, military power is expanding, but measures to contain military conflict are not. There are few concrete mechanisms to prevent it,” said the head of the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • On Wednesday, September 20, Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke at the UN Security Council. During his speech, in particular, he emphasized the need to reform the organization, create a mechanism to overcome the veto and allow all nations to be represented. The president emphasized that the right of veto, which the Russian Federation has in the UN, “makes the organization ineffective.”
