After Vladimir Putin announced at the economic forum in St. Petersburg about the possible introduction of changes to the nuclear doctrine, today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation confirmed that it is starting work on the changes, – writes June 11 The Moscow Time.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Serhii Ryabkov, the Russian authorities can rewrite the country’s nuclear doctrine due to the “escalating actions” of the United States and NATO.
“I can only say that the situation has a tendency to further complication, and the challenges that are multiplying as a result of the unacceptable and escalating actions of the United States and its NATO allies, without any doubt, raise before us the question of how the basic documents in the field of nuclear deterrence, it will be possible to bring it more into line with current needs,” said Ryabkov.
At the same time, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the Russian authorities will not announce in advance what kind of changes will be made to the documents on nuclear deterrence.
The conditions under which Russia can use nuclear weapons are enshrined in the Basics of the State Policy of the Russian Federation in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence, which was adopted in 2020. There are four of them in total: Russia receives reliable information about the launch of ballistic missiles attacking its territory or the territory of its allies; the enemy uses nuclear weapons or other types of weapons of mass destruction against Russia and its allies; the adversary acts against Russian critical state or military facilities, which can disrupt the corresponding actions of Russian nuclear forces; Russia is being attacked with conventional weapons, which threatens the existence of the state.
